Gunghap (궁합): why Korean couples check their charts before marrying

What gunghap means

Gunghap compares two saju charts and asks how their energies meet: where they support each other, where they press, and what the pairing is likely to feel like over time.

Traditionally it was split into 겉궁합 — the surface match, largely the year animals — and 속궁합, the inner match drawn from the deeper pillars. The surface layer is the one that survives in pop culture; the inner layer is the one readers spend their time on.

What a reader looks at

A proper comparison is a chart-to-chart reading, not an animal lookup:

• The two Day Masters and how their elements relate
• The day branches — the spouse palace in each chart
• Whether one chart supplies the element the other is short of
• Harmonies and clashes across all four pillars
• Whether the two decade cycles are moving together or apart right now

How it’s actually used today

Rarely as a veto, and mostly by the older generation as reassurance rather than as a test. Plenty of couples get it done knowing they’ll marry regardless, treating a poor result as something to be aware of rather than something to obey.

Where it does earn its place is as a conversation: a reading that names the specific friction between two temperaments gives a couple something concrete to talk about, which is more than most compatibility quizzes manage.

Reading a bad result honestly

A low score is not a prophecy, and any reader who tells you a relationship is doomed has left the tradition and entered showmanship. Clashes describe friction and movement; unbalanced elements describe effort in a particular direction.
