Korean zodiac compatibility: what the animals get right, and what they miss

Animal compatibility charts are everywhere, and they aren’t nonsense — the pairings come from real mechanics in the system. They’re just one character against one character, out of sixteen in play. Here’s the actual machinery, and what a fuller reading adds.
Where the pairings come from
Two rules do most of the work. Six harmony pairs (육합) bind adjacent branches; four three-branch groups (삼합) form when three specific animals meet, each group producing one element. These are the “compatible” cells on the chart.
Against them sit six clash pairs (충) — branches directly opposite on the cycle: rat–horse, ox–sheep, tiger–monkey, rabbit–rooster, dragon–dog, snake–pig. These are the “incompatible” cells.
A clash is not a verdict
This is where popular charts oversell. A clash reads as friction, movement and change — two branches that don’t sit still together. Plenty of long marriages contain one, and plenty of frictionless pairings go nowhere.
Read it as temperature rather than sentence: what the pairing will feel like, not whether it should exist.
What a full comparison adds
Animals are the year branch. A chart comparison looks at all of it:
- Day Masters — how the two core characters relate: producing, controlling, matching
- Day branches — traditionally the spouse palace, and the more telling half of the animal question
- Element balance — whether one chart supplies what the other is short of
- Combinations and clashes across all four pillars, not just the year
- Timing — whether the two charts’ decade cycles are moving in compatible directions
Why we show the reasons
A number with no explanation is a fortune cookie. Our compatibility score is computed by the engine and comes with the components that produced it — which pairs harmonised, which clashed, where the elements complemented — so you can disagree with it in specifics rather than accept or reject it whole.
And it stays a reference. Two charts have never been the reason two people work; they’re a description of the weather between them.

Which zodiac animals are most compatible?
By the standard rules, the six harmony pairs and the four three-animal groups. But those describe one branch out of eight per person — useful as a first note, not a conclusion.
We’re a clash pair. Is that a problem?
It reads as friction and movement, which is not the same as failure. What it usually means is that the relationship won’t be static — worth knowing, not worth panicking over.
Is this the same as gunghap?
Animal matching is the surface layer of gunghap. Traditional practice compares whole charts, and the deeper layers are where most of the reading lives.
Do we both need birth times?
It helps, and the comparison works without them. Missing hours simply narrow what can be said about the hour pillars.
